What move heatmaps show

Move heatmaps show where visitors move their pointer on a page. Pointer movement can help reveal where visitors scan, pause, compare, or prepare to click.

Move heatmaps are most useful on desktop. Mobile visitors do not use a mouse pointer, so mobile movement data is limited or unavailable.

How to interpret movement

Pointer movement is not the same as eye tracking. It does not prove exactly where someone looked.

However, movement patterns can still help you understand:

  • areas visitors investigate
  • sections visitors compare
  • elements visitors hover before clicking
  • parts of the page that draw attention
  • content visitors skip

Use movement as a supporting signal, not the only source of truth.

Compare movement and clicks

Movement without clicks can mean visitors considered an element but did not act.

Clicks without much movement can happen when the visitor already knows what they want.

Compare move heatmaps with click heatmaps to understand whether visitors are simply scanning or actually interacting.

Find confusing areas

Lots of movement around a section can indicate comparison or uncertainty. If the same area also has dead clicks, rage clicks, or low conversion, review recordings for context.

Device limitations

Move heatmaps are strongest for desktop traffic. For mobile analysis, rely more on tap/click heatmaps, scroll heatmaps, attention heatmaps, and session replay.

  • Use desktop data where possible.
  • Compare movement with clicks.
  • Look for heavy movement around important decisions.
  • Use replay to confirm confusion.
  • Do not treat movement as exact eye tracking.
