Open session replays

Open a site in UserTrail and choose Sessions. The sessions list shows recorded visits for the selected site and date range.

Each session can include details such as:

  • page path
  • device type
  • browser and operating system
  • country or region
  • duration
  • traffic source
  • friction events
  • friction score

Choose a date range

Use the date picker to review sessions from a specific period. Start with a narrow period when investigating a recent issue, then widen the range if you need more examples.

For weekly or monthly analysis, compare sessions with other reports such as Friction, Heatmaps, Funnels, and Forms.

Use filters

Filters help you find the sessions that matter. Common filters include:

  • device
  • operating system
  • browser
  • screen resolution
  • country or region
  • traffic source
  • visitor type
  • friction event type
  • friction score

For example, filter to mobile sessions with submit failures to review visitors who struggled with a form on phones.

Open and review a replay

Open a session to watch the visitor journey. Look for:

  • repeated clicks
  • dead clicks
  • hesitation
  • scrolling before key sections
  • form abandonment
  • navigation loops
  • layout or rendering problems
  • errors or friction events

Use playback controls to move through the recording, pause, and inspect the visitor's behavior around important moments.

Use replay with other reports

Session replay is most useful when opened from another report.

Examples:

  • Open recordings from Friction to investigate rage clicks or dead clicks.
  • Open recordings from Funnels to understand step drop-off.
  • Open recordings from Forms to review submit failures.
  • Compare individual sessions with heatmap patterns.

This gives you both aggregate evidence and individual context.

Manage session usage

Every recorded session counts toward your plan allowance. If your site has high traffic, adjust recording controls or recording rate to preserve monthly allowance.

Do not reduce usage by removing privacy masking. Masking protects visitors and should remain enabled for sensitive content.

Replay checklist

  • Start with a focused question.
  • Filter sessions before watching.
  • Review several sessions before deciding.
  • Compare mobile and desktop separately.
  • Check friction events and score.
  • Confirm private data is masked.
