What is a session?

A session is one visitor recording period for one website visitor on one tracked site. It starts when the tracker creates a session id and begins sending eligible activity for that visit.

Session usage is counted once per session id, even if the visitor sends multiple replay chunks or many interaction events. A long recording with several chunks still counts as one session.

Examples:

  • One visitor opens your homepage, pricing page, and signup page in the same visit: one session.
  • The same visitor returns later and starts a new tracked visit: another session.
  • A recording is split into multiple replay chunks: still one session.

What data can belong to a session

A session can include:

  • pageviews
  • clicks
  • scroll activity
  • movement samples
  • session replay data
  • device, browser, and operating system information
  • traffic source information
  • friction events
  • form and funnel activity when applicable

Not every session contains every data type. For example, a short visit may have a pageview and scroll data but no form activity.

Monthly limits

Each plan includes a monthly session allowance. The allowance is shared across the sites owned by the account.

When the allowance is used, new tracking config responses mark the account as out of sessions so the tracker stops sending events and surveys do not show.

This protects the account from collecting more sessions than the plan includes. Existing reports remain available according to your retention settings and plan access.

What happens when the limit is reached

When the account is out of session credits:

  • new visitor sessions are not recorded
  • new heatmap and replay data stops being collected
  • surveys do not show to new visitors
  • tracking resumes after the next monthly reset or after upgrading, depending on your account state

If your account was out of credits and the monthly allowance resets, UserTrail sends a session refill email. That email will mention that tracking resumes only when the account was actually out of credits.

Monthly reset

Session counters are grouped by monthly period and reset when a new monthly period begins.

For trial and free accounts, the period is based on the account's session allowance window. For paid subscriptions, the reset date follows the subscription anchor. If you upgrade mid-month, the new refill date is based on the upgrade or subscription start date.

Where to view usage

Open Billing to review your current plan and session allowance. Depending on the account state, you may see:

  • current plan
  • session limit
  • usage for the current period
  • next refill date
  • upgrade options
  • billing cycle

Use this page to decide whether to upgrade before the account reaches its session limit.

How to reduce session usage

If you want to preserve session allowance:

  • track only the sites you need
  • avoid installing the snippet on staging or internal environments
  • use consent mode where required
  • exclude pages that should not be recorded
  • focus tracking on the pages that matter most during high-traffic campaigns

Do not reduce usage by removing privacy masking. Masking is a privacy control, not a usage control.

Common questions

Do heatmap events count separately?

No. Heatmap events are part of tracked behaviour, but monthly plan usage is based on sessions.

Does one visitor count once forever?

No. A visitor can create multiple sessions over time. Each new tracked session can count toward the monthly allowance.

Do replay chunks count as sessions?

No. Replay chunks are storage pieces for a recording. A session only counts once per session id.

Do team members affect session usage?

No. Team members viewing the dashboard do not count as tracked visitor sessions unless they visit the tracked website and are recorded like any other visitor.
