Upgrading and downgrading subscriptions

Understand what happens when you move between UserTrail plans, billing cycles, and account limits.

When to upgrade

Upgrade when your current plan no longer matches how much data you need to collect or how your team uses UserTrail.

Common reasons to upgrade include:

  • monthly session allowance is too low
  • tracking pauses before the end of the month
  • you need more report access or retention
  • you are launching a campaign with higher traffic
  • you need paid features after the trial ends
  • you manage multiple client sites

Review current usage before upgrading so you choose a plan that fits expected traffic, not just current traffic.

Upgrade from trial or free

Trial and free users can open Billing and choose Upgrade plan. Select the plan and billing cycle before checkout.

Before confirming checkout, review:

  • plan name
  • monthly or yearly billing
  • price
  • session allowance
  • applied coupon or referral discount
  • renewal terms

After checkout succeeds, UserTrail updates the account subscription and applies the paid plan limits.

Upgrade from one paid plan to another

When you upgrade from one paid plan to a higher paid plan, Stripe may apply a prorated charge based on the current billing period.

This means the upgrade charge can account for unused time on the existing plan. The final amount is shown in the checkout or billing flow before you confirm.

Upgrading can also update the session allowance anchor date. If you upgrade mid-month, future session refill emails use the new subscription or upgrade date.

Downgrading a subscription

Downgrading reduces the plan level and may reduce included limits or access to paid features.

Before downgrading, check:

  • current monthly session usage
  • expected traffic before the next reset
  • whether exports or reports should be downloaded
  • whether team members need features from the current plan
  • whether active sites will still fit within the lower limits

If the lower plan has a smaller allowance, tracking may stop sooner once the new limits apply.

Cancelling instead of downgrading

Cancelling is different from downgrading. Cancelling schedules the paid subscription to end at the current billing period end. Paid features usually remain available until that date.

Use cancellation when you no longer want the paid subscription to renew. Use downgrade when you still want a paid plan but need a smaller plan.

What happens to session limits

Session limits are tied to the active plan and monthly usage period.

When a plan changes:

  • the available allowance may increase or decrease
  • the session refill date may change
  • tracking resumes if the account now has available session allowance
  • tracking may pause later if the new allowance is reached

If your account was out of credits and a plan change gives it more allowance, new tracking can resume once the subscription state is active.

Coupons and referral discounts

Coupons and referral discounts can affect upgrade pricing. Only one discount can be assigned at once.

If a referral discount is already assigned to the account, additional coupons cannot be assigned at the same time. Some discounts only apply for a limited number of months.

Always review checkout before confirming payment.

Billing cycles

Monthly billing renews each month. Yearly billing renews once per year and may offer better value for long-term use.

When switching billing cycle, review the checkout carefully. The new billing period and renewal amount should be shown before payment is confirmed.

Before changing subscriptions

Use this checklist before upgrading, downgrading, or cancelling:

  • Check current session usage.
  • Check next refill date.
  • Review active sites.
  • Review team and agency needs.
  • Export important reports if needed.
  • Confirm whether a coupon or referral discount is active.
  • Confirm the billing cycle.
  • Make sure the account owner understands the change.

After changing subscriptions

After a subscription change:

  1. Open Billing and confirm the new plan.
  2. Check the session allowance and refill date.
  3. Visit a tracked website to confirm tracking still works.
  4. Review the next invoice or billing history.
  5. Tell team members if feature access changed.

If the dashboard still shows the old plan after checkout, wait a short time and refresh. If it still does not update, contact support with the account email and checkout details.
