What friction insights are
Friction insights help you find where visitors are getting stuck, confused, or blocked. UserTrail groups frustration signals into reports so you can prioritise the pages and sessions that need attention.
Friction insights include:
- friction overview
- sessions with friction over time
- top pages to focus on
- friction score over time
- pages with most click friction
- elements with most click friction
- top click errors
- broken links and 404s
Friction overview
The friction overview shows the number of detected friction events by type. This helps you quickly see whether the selected period is dominated by dead clicks, rage clicks, submit failures, 404s, or other problems.
Use the overview to choose which issue to investigate first. High-volume events on high-traffic pages usually deserve attention before isolated events.
Sessions and friction
The sessions and friction graph compares sessions with friction against total sessions over time. This helps separate traffic spikes from genuine experience problems.
For example, if sessions rise but friction stays flat, the experience may be stable. If friction rises faster than sessions, something may have changed on the website.
Top pages to focus on
Top pages to focus on ranks pages using a combination of visitor impact and friction severity. The ranking considers traffic volume, friction probability, session exits, page exits, early friction, and friction score.
Open these pages first when you want the highest-impact investigation list.
Friction score over time
Friction score summarises frustration severity. Lower is better.
Use the trend to understand whether the website experience is improving or getting worse over the selected date range. Spikes should be reviewed alongside releases, campaigns, and website changes.
Click friction reports
The pages and elements click friction reports show where click-related issues happen most often.
Use them to find:
- elements that look clickable but are not
- buttons that trigger errors
- confusing page sections
- repeated rage clicks
- important calls to action with dead clicks
Hover element labels to inspect the full selector or element text where available.
Open recordings and heatmaps
Use the action buttons to open matching session recordings or friction heatmaps. UserTrail applies the relevant friction filters so the destination view focuses on the same issue.
Recordings show the behaviour before and after the event. Friction heatmaps show where repeated friction events happened on the page.
Use filters
Apply filters to narrow the report by:
- date range
- device
- browser
- operating system
- country or region
- traffic source
- visitor type
- friction event type
Filtering is useful when friction only affects one device, browser, campaign, or audience segment.
Best practices
- Start with high-impact pages, not only high event counts.
- Watch recordings before making design changes.
- Check whether friction is device-specific.
- Compare friction spikes with recent deployments.
- Use surveys when you need visitors to explain why they struggled.
