What friction heatmaps show

Friction heatmaps show where frustration signals happen on a page. Instead of showing all clicks, they focus on problem events such as rage clicks, dead clicks, click errors, submit failures, 404s, bounces, and speed browsing.

Use friction heatmaps to find the exact page areas that create frustration.

Why friction heatmaps are useful

Friction reports tell you which pages and sessions have problems. Friction heatmaps show where those problems happen visually on the page.

This is useful when:

  • visitors repeatedly click a non-clickable element
  • a form submit fails
  • a pricing card causes rage clicks
  • a call to action is unclear
  • mobile users struggle with one page area

Review friction clusters

If several friction events happen close together, UserTrail may group them visually so the heatmap is easier to read.

Open the popup or related recordings to understand which events were grouped and what the visitor experienced.

Use the recording links from friction heatmaps to watch sessions with the matching friction filters. Replay helps you understand what happened before and after the event.

Do not rely on the heatmap alone. The same friction event can have different causes depending on the page state and visitor intent.

Prioritise fixes

Prioritise friction areas that have:

  • high event count
  • high friction score
  • high traffic
  • important conversion impact
  • repeated occurrence across devices

Fixing a high-traffic page with repeated dead clicks is usually more valuable than fixing a one-off issue on a low-traffic page.

Friction heatmap checklist

  • Select Friction from the heatmap type dropdown.
  • Filter by date and device.
  • Review friction event clusters.
  • Open related recordings.
  • Compare with the Friction page.
  • Fix repeated high-impact issues first.
