Website settings

Manage site details, recording controls, privacy settings, and tracking behavior for a UserTrail website.

Open website settings

Open a site in the dashboard, then go to Settings. Website settings control how UserTrail identifies the site, what is recorded, and how privacy rules are applied.

Only users with the correct permission can manage settings. If the settings link is hidden or disabled, ask the site owner or an admin to update your access.

Site details

Site details help your team identify the website in dashboards, reports, email summaries, and dropdowns.

Review:

Use a clear site name when you manage multiple websites. For example, use "Acme Store - Production" instead of just "Website".

Tracking snippet

Each site has its own tracking snippet. Install the snippet for the correct site on the matching domain.

If you copy a snippet from the wrong site, data may appear under the wrong dashboard. When troubleshooting, compare the site id in the snippet with the site id shown in settings.

Recording controls

Recording controls determine whether UserTrail should collect sessions and related behaviour data for the site.

Depending on your plan and account state, settings may include:

  • recording enabled or disabled
  • recording rate
  • privacy and masking controls
  • consent-aware installation guidance

If recording is disabled, new sessions and heatmap data will not be collected until it is enabled again.

Recording rate

Recording rate controls how much eligible traffic should be recorded. A lower rate can reduce session usage on high-traffic sites.

Use a lower recording rate when:

  • the site has much more traffic than your monthly session allowance
  • you only need representative behaviour samples
  • you are running a short high-traffic campaign

Use a higher rate when:

  • you need detailed coverage for a launch
  • you are diagnosing a conversion issue
  • you have enough session allowance for the traffic volume

Privacy and masking

Privacy settings help prevent sensitive content from appearing in recordings and reports.

Review these settings before enabling tracking on pages with:

  • forms
  • checkout flows
  • account details
  • personal information
  • support messages

Use masking attributes such as data-analytics-private and data-analytics-mask for private elements. See the privacy and masking documentation for implementation examples.

Team access

Website settings are also affected by team permissions. A user may be able to view reports without being allowed to edit settings.

Use team permissions to decide who can:

  • view analytics
  • edit site settings
  • invite other users
  • manage tracking configuration

Keep settings access limited to people who understand the tracking and privacy impact of changes.

After changing settings

After changing website settings:

  1. Save the changes.
  2. Visit the website in a test browser.
  3. Confirm tracking still works.
  4. Check Sessions and Heatmaps after processing.
  5. Review masking if privacy settings changed.

Some changes affect only new sessions. Existing reports may continue to show data collected before the setting changed.

Troubleshooting settings

If expected data is missing after a settings change:

  • confirm recording is enabled
  • check the recording rate
  • verify the site has session allowance
  • confirm the snippet is still installed
  • review consent and tag manager rules
  • check whether the page is excluded or fully masked

If you are unsure, return to the installation verification guide and test a new visit from start to finish.
